 Mindfulness/ Meditation/Emotional Health

Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world by Prof Mark Williams and Dr Danny Penman (5 May 2011) with CD

  1. HERE FOR NOW: Living Well with Cancer Through Mindfulness by Elana Rosenbaum 2005 Satya House Publications ISBN 978-0-9729191-2-8.  Very good for anyone suffering from Cancer but also good if you suffer from M.E. or M.S or are ill and struggling.

  2. Living Well with Pain and Illness: the Mindful Way to Free Yourself from Suffering.  by Vidymala Burch 2008 Piatkus £16.99 ISBN 9780749928605.  A book by a mindfulness teacher who has experienced terrible physical pain her self.  Very good.

  3. Be Here Now by Ram Dass.  A Classic.  published 1971

  4. Contemplative Science: Where Buddhism and Neuroscience Meet. by B. Alan Wallace Columbia University Press      ISBN 9780231138345

  5. The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself From Chronic Unhappiness by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal, and Jono Kabat -Zinn.  Guildford Press about £13.  ISBN-13:978-1-59385-128-6  This book is very good......it has most of the mindfulness techniques that I teach to beginners and a CD which has the meditations guided by Jon Kabat-Zinn.  He teaches rather than guides through a meditation so after a while the CD seems to be 'too much talking' but it is still very good. It gives the outline of an eight week course at the end so that you can progress slowly.  I use this book and CD a lot when teaching.

Full Catastrophe Living: How to Cope with Stress, Pain and Illness Using Mindfulness Meditation - Jon Kabat-Zinn

  1. Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression: A New Approach to Preventing Relapse - Jon Kabat-Zinn

  2. Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves - Sharon Begley

  3. The Art Of Happiness: A Handbook for Living by HH Dalai Lama & Howard C. Cutler 1998 ISBN 0-340-83618-0 If only I could just implement the teachings in this book.  I often read just one chapter a week and try to live by that.  For quite a while it was my favourite bed time read........so easy to read and I would look forward to getting to the next chapter.  It is a course book on my courses.

  4. Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill by Matthieu Ricard 2007 Atlantic Books.  Again a very easy and enjoyable read whilst being immensely helpful.

  5. Meditation for Beginners by Jack Kornfield 2004 Bantam Books ISBN0-553-81692-6  This also has a CD with guided meditations which are very good.  I had this as a course book for students I had been teaching for a couple of years and they were slightly offended at first because of the title.......but then found this to be a gem of a book and we spent a whole term going through it a chapter a week .........it was a great hit so now I use it often in teaching.

Emotional Intelligence: Why It can Matter More Than IQ by Daniel Goleman 1996 Bloomsbury Publishing ISBN 0-7475-2622-2 It was ground breaking in the West in the mid nineties and is an important book for all its TV/media popularity.  Working with the mind, we really need to know how the mind and emotions work and impact on the brain and vice versa.

  1. Destructive Emotions and how we can overcome them A dialogue with the Dalai Lama narrated by Daniel Goleman 2003 Bloomsbury Publishing.  ISBN 0-7475-5393-9  A bit more dense to read........but worth it.  Read it slowly and ponder.

  2. A Path with Heart Jack Kornfield ISBN: 0712674306 See at amazon.co.uk   One of my all time favourites – I read this again and again and recommend it to beginners.  It covers so many aspects of the journey.

  3. Joyful Mind : A Practical Guide to Buddhist Meditation by Susan Piver.  I like this, it also has two CD's inside its cover - one which gives guided meditations and one with flute music for meditation.

  4. Books by Rick Hanson

Hatha Yoga
There are very many good books out there.  I recommend you go and browse in a big bookshop and see what you like.  These days you can get DVD’s and CD’s included with the book.  Books I have been using recently are:

  1. Yoga Heals Your Back: 10 Minute Routines That End Back and Neck Pain by Rita Trieger.  ISBN-13:978-1-59233-093-5 See at amazon.co.uk, This is quite frankly my favourite yoga book of all time........it is utterly brilliant and even better you can buy it and follow it all on your own.......as it is so clear and has wonderfully helpful photographs through out.  If you only want to buy one book .....buy this one!

  2. Light on Yoga B.K.S. Iyengar., ISBN: 0007107005, See at amazon.co.uk,

  6. Step-by Step Yoga for Stress Relief Swami Shivapremananda ISBN 1-85675-126 0 Gaia Books.A very helpful book. See amazon.co.uk

  7. The Heart of Yoga – Developing a personal practice by T.K.V. Desikachar ISBN 089281764X  A super book – really helpful for the beginner as well as the tutor.

  8. Complete Book of Yoga by Vimla Lalvani.  ISBN 0-753706156.  Has a lot of yoga sequences which are fun to do and is often found in cheap bookshops at a very reduced rate.

  9. Teaching Yoga: Exploring the Teacher- Student Relationship by Donna Farhi Cd included.  Rodmell Press. ISN 13: 9781930485174.  This is good for meditation teachers and yoga teachers alike as it goes into detail about the ethics of the student teacher relationship and how we should behave as teachers.

  10. Dru Yoga: Stillness in Motion (1 Dec 2005) by Chris Barrington, Anita Goswami, and Annie Jones.   good mindful yoga sequences and instruction. They tend to go on about 'Dru Yoga ' being THE yoga, (as if)  but once you mentally edit that out, it is good.
