Heart and Mind Yoga
Yoga in the Deepest Sense
Books
Here are some of the books Sarah has mentioned in her courses.
Mindfulness/ Meditation/Emotional Health
- HERE
FOR NOW: Living Well with Cancer Through Mindfulness by Elana Rosenbaum
2005 Satya House Publications ISBN 978-0-9729191-2-8. Vry good
for anyone suffering from Cancer but also good if you suffer from M.E.
or M.S or are ill and struggling.
- The
Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself From Chronic
Unhappiness by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal, and Jono
Kabat -Zinn. Guildford Press about £13.
ISBN-13:978-1-59385-128-6 This book is very good......it
has most of the mindfulness techniques that I teach to beginners and a
CD which has the meditations guided by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He teaches
rather than guides through a meditation so after a while the CD seems
to be 'too much talking' but it is still very good. It gives the
outline of an eight week course at the end so that you can progress
slowly. I use this book and CD a lot when teaching.
- The
Joy of Living: Unlocking the Secret & Science of Happiness by
Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche 2007 Harmony Books ISBN 978-0-307-34625-4
Readable and full of hope and inspiration. Mingyur Rinpoche
teaches with such humour and clarity and this book is full of his joy
and wisdom. He is known to be one of the happiest people on the
planet...........brain research has been able to verify this!!
- The
Art Of Happiness: A Handbook for Living by HH Dalai Lama & Howard
C. Cutler 1998 ISBN 0-340-83618-0 If only I could just implement the
teachings in this book. I often read just one chapter a week and
try to live by that. For quite a while it was my favourite bed
time read........so easy to read and I would look forward to getting to
the next chapter. You will surely enjoy this whilst learning how
to be happy. It is a course book on my courses.
- Happiness:
A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill by Matthieu Ricard
2007 Atlantic Books. Again a very easy and enjoyable read whilst
being immensely helpful.
- Meditation
for Beginners by Jack Kornfield 2004 Bantam Books ISBN0-553-81692-6
This also has a CD with guided meditations which are very good.
I had this as a course book for students I had been teaching for
a couple of years and they were slightly offended at first because of
the title.......but then found this to be a gem of a book and we spent
a whole term going through it a chapter a week .........it was a great
hit so now I use it often in teaching.
- Emotional
Intelligence: Why It can Matter More Than IQ by Daniel Goleman 1996
Bloomsbury Publishing ISBN 0-7475-2622-2 It was ground breaking in the
West in the mid nineties and is an important book for all its TV/media
popularity. Working with the mind, we really need to know how the
mind and emotions work and impact on the brain and vice versa.
- Destructive
Emotions and how we can overcome them A dialogue with the Dalai Lama
narrated by Daniel Goleman 2003 Bloomsbury Publishing. ISBN
0-7475-5393-9 A bit more dense to read........but worth it.
Read it slowly and ponder.
- A
Path with Heart Jack Kornfield ISBN: 0712674306 See at amazon.co.uk
One
of my
all
time favourites – I read this again and again and recommend it to
beginners. It covers so many aspects of the journey.
- Mind
Training by Ringu Tulku 2003 Dhi Publications ISBN 0 9525589 2 0 A nice
compact book with vital teachings about training the mind.

helpful. Any book by him is good.

- Taming the Tiger by Akong Tulku
Rinpoche ISBN 0712662200
- Cutting
Through Spiritual Materialism by Chogyam
Trungpa ISBN 0877730504.A well known
classic
- Joyful
Mind : A Practical Guide to Buddhist Meditation by Susan Piver. I
like this, it also has two CD's inside its cover - one which gives
guided meditations and one with flute music for meditation.
Christianity
encountering Other Faiths
These books are about
how people
have lived and found the divine truth in other traditions and
discovered that
this exploration not only enriched their journey in their own tradition
but
often brought insights that were obscured before.
- Christian Insight Meditation: Following in the Footstpes of John of hte
Cross by Mary Jo Meadow 2007 Wisdom Books. ISBN -10:0-86171-526-8 I
like this book and would recommend it to those coming from the
Christian tradition. They do not use the devotional practices of
Tibetan Buddhism but are well trained in Insight Meditation and
mindfulness.
- Encountering
God – a Spiritual Journey from Bozeman to Banares by Diana L.Eck, Beacon Press ISBN
0807073032 This is the personal account of a Christian who discovers
the rich
beauty and wisdom of God in Hinduism. Diana L. Eck is professor of
comparative
religion and Indian studies at Harvard University. An inspiring read.

of my
favourites.
- All
books by William Johnston are highly recommended. He is a Jesuit priest
and
scholar who has lived in Tokyo for most of his life.
- The
Silence of God The
Answer of the Buddha. By Raimundo Panikkar. ISBN 0883444453 Panikkar’s
books
tend to be quite heavy going but they are full of personal inspiration
– and as
a Jesuit priest and scholar – he is tremendously knowledgeable on
Indian
thought. This is a remarkable book from a remarkable man.
- Return
to the Centre by Fr
Bede Griffiths. ISBN 0-00-625276-1, A wonderful man, a Benedictine monk
